In May 2022, Malvika Agrawal founded Pakhi’s Art Corner as a result of her personal and artistic awakening. Malvika, with an engineering and MBA background, had previously worked as a banker. However, she put her professional journey on hold to focus on her family for seven years. Despite her dedication as a homemaker, her love for painting, which had always been a hobby, remained unfulfilled until the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, Malvika rediscovered her passion for art.
What initially began as a personal endeavor quickly transformed into a business idea as her friends and family admired her creations.
Malvika started by hand-painting apparel for her loved ones, and soon, word spread in her community. As demand increased, she took a leap of faith, assembling a team of local tailors and women from her neighborhood.
Together, they brought Pakhi’s Art Corner to life, a brand where every piece of clothing is uniquely hand-painted, ensuring that no two designs are ever the same. Malvika’s initiative also became a platform to empower women by providing them with employment opportunities, making Pakhi’s Art Corner a brand by women, for women.
Overcoming Challenges and Building a Unique Brand
Starting a business in a small town like Mehsana, Gujarat, presented several challenges for Malvika. One significant hurdle she faced was sourcing quality materials, which she overcame by frequently traveling to her hometown in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Another challenge was the lack of local customers willing to pay for hand-painted sarees, which could easily be replaced by cheaper, mass-produced alternatives.
However, with perseverance and a strategic shift to social media marketing, Malvika began attracting customers from across India. From just a few orders a month, Pakhi’s Art Corner grew exponentially as customers from cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, and Dehradun began placing orders for her unique designs. Malvika’s brand also carved a niche in customization, offering services such as doodle work on apparel, where she would intricately hand-paint personal stories or special moments onto garments.
The Future of Pakhi’s Art Corner
As Pakhi’s Art Corner continues to grow, Malvika envisions a future where her brand has a presence across India and internationally. Her mission is to modernize traditional Indian attire, particularly sarees, by blending them with contemporary styles while staying true to their cultural roots.
In the next seven years, she aims to open multiple outlets and employ at least 100 women, ensuring that her brand becomes a beacon of empowerment for women everywhere. With a vision deeply tied to her daughter, Pakhi, Malvika hopes to see her brand flourish, symbolizing the fusion of tradition, creativity, and women’s empowerment.
