In today’s world, parents are increasingly aware of the impact of their choices on the environment and the ethical practices behind the products they purchase. This has led to a growing demand for sustainable and ethical fashion, especially in children’s clothing. My Mini Trunk, founded by Priyanka Bhandari, has successfully carved a niche in the kids’ clothing market by offering handloom ethnic wear that prioritizes both craftsmanship and sustainability. Catering to boys and girls from ages zero to 15, My Mini Trunk is known for its quality, ethical values, and timeless designs.
The Inception of My Mini Trunk and Priyanka’s Journey
My Mini Trunk was born out of Priyanka Bhandari’s long-standing desire to launch a kidswear brand. Coming from a family deeply rooted in the women’s clothing business for over 20 years, she had the experience and knowledge necessary to make her dream a reality. Both Priyanka’s mother’s side and her husband’s side were already established in the women’s wear industry. However, it was during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 that Priyanka finally had the opportunity to explore her passion for kidswear. The downtime allowed her to start researching and building her vision.
Starting with a pure handloom collection from Mangalgiri, My Mini Trunk sourced its fabrics directly from weavers. The brand focuses on creating ethnic wear, offering a wide range of garments such as lehengas, shararas, tunics, and kurta pajamas, catering to casual as well as party wear needs. Despite being relatively new, the brand has already gained recognition and established partnerships with popular platforms like Little Muffet, Nykaa, and Pernia.
Unique Approach and Challenges
One of the key aspects that sets My Mini Trunk apart from other kids’ clothing brands is its commitment to creating a wide variety of collections and customizing products based on client requests. With a new range of designs and samplings every 15 days, the brand ensures its customers always have access to fresh and exciting options. While most of their business comes from online platforms, they have served around 300-400 clients, prioritizing customer satisfaction with a monthly order turnout of 600 pieces.
However, like any growing brand, My Mini Trunk faces challenges. Labor availability has been a consistent issue, especially during peak seasons, since the business is largely dependent on manual, skilled workers. Priyanka highlights how the clothing line relies heavily on the artisans’ availability, and disruptions due to health or personal reasons can slow down production.
Sustainability and Future Plans
Sustainability is at the core of My Mini Trunk’s philosophy. Priyanka is committed to minimizing waste by repurposing fabric scraps and donating them to Kalaviti, a brand that creates beautiful handmade products such as earrings, bookmarks, and necklaces from these materials. This approach not only reduces waste but also contributes to a larger ethical ecosystem. The new collection has already been launched and is now available on their website.
The collection emphasizes comfort and style, ensuring that customers can celebrate in elegance. The brand has also expanded into a larger workshop where they have incorporated in-house machine and hand embroidery services. With these developments, Priyanka aims to further grow the brand while maintaining the high standards of quality and sustainability that My Mini Trunk is known for.
