The Founder’s Story & The Secret Sauce Behind The Success
Arathi Rajagopalan, a fashionpreneur, Stylist and Founder of – House of Kalart -an avant-garde jewellery label, is a graduate of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and is certified in Goldsmithing and gemmology from SINGEM. She started House of Kalart along with her mother and business partner Mrs. Kalavathi Rajagopalan, who is a gold medalist in economics.
A self-taught artist, Arathi’s passion for art and design started way back in childhood. With an experience of more than a decade of working in fashion shoots and movies, Style Consultation came as an offshoot of her continuous interest in fashion. Arathi’s experience and foresight along with her personal entrepreneurial bent and affinity for creative design selection played a large role in starting House of Kalart through which she aims to create a holistic fashion experience for all bold and dramatic humans!
Sharing her entrepreneurial journey, Arathi mentions, “When I was a child, an aunt used to teach us all sorts of crafts from clay modelling to foil work to almost every craft during vacations which turned out to be an inspiration & stepping stone for my career. Colours & textures not only inspire me, it also instigates a play of design in my head and to be able to actually touch, hold and add character to something that was just an idea is an immense joy. My passion for jewellery made me venture into starting the jewellery label House of Kalart, where art is married with metalsmithing to create well-crafted fashion jewellery.”
Talking about the initial hiccups that eventually turned into stepping stones for her business, Arathi shares, “Initially it was difficult to find manufacturers who could experiment with designs and also create awareness amongst customers on this contemporary fusion line. It is easy to dream and visualise a design, the real challenge starts when you get down to manufacturing it. I faced challenges in R&D initially trying to execute the idea of marrying art or surface ornamentation with metalsmithing, replacing art in place of a stone and creating well-crafted fashionable jewellery. Many artisans were not willing to experiment with new designs as they were more comfortable making what they were used to. I went on to learn the processes myself which made it easier for me to break it down and convince artisans.”
The Sparkling Road Ahead
Having successfully served 1000+ customers worldwide, the brand aims to strategically place itself all over the world. Presently the brand sells online through its website, Instagram & Facebook pages. They get most of the organic traffic popping up from the U.S. market and aim to be known as a renowned global brand in years to go. In future, it envisions working with grassroots-level artisans and teaching them how to launch their collections in a contemporary form so as to revive many of the art forms that are fading away.
